A 200-Amp Panel Upgrade Should Be Tied to Real New Loads

“Get a 200-amp panel” shows up in remodel chats and listing notes like a default upgrade. Sometimes it is the right move. Sometimes it is a bigger project than the loads you plan to add. Ask which real loads need capacity the current service cannot support. Do not upgrade just because 200 amps sounds modern.

Put existing service beside calculated loads

Start with what you have: service size, panel condition, feeder path, grounding, and how full the bus already is. Then list what is changing: a heat pump or larger outdoor unit, EV charging, a range or dryer move, a shop or addition, or a kitchen full of new appliances. The upgrade conversation should sit between those two lists.

A panel can be crowded with tandem breakers and still serve a house that never adds another large load. Another house can have open slots and still need a service change because the main size and feeder cannot carry the new continuous demand. Slots and amps answer different questions.

Photograph the panel with the door open and gather appliance or charger cut sheets when you have them. That is enough for a serious first visit.

EV charging, HVAC, and shop loads are not interchangeable

An EV charger is a continuous load with a specific circuit path. HVAC equipment has starting and running characteristics that already shape how the panel feels on hot afternoons. A shop welder, compressor, or detached-building feeder is another pattern again. Stacking those words into one “we need more power” request hides which item is driving the upgrade.

Utility coordination and panel space both matter

A true service upgrade often involves the utility, the meter enclosure, the grounding system, and inspection sequencing. Indoor panel replacement with the same service size is a different project. Ask which one is being proposed and why.

Panel space still counts after the amp rating is settled. A neat 200-amp panel with no room for the circuits you already know you need is only half a plan. Directory labeling, surge protection decisions, and clear working space belong in the same scope conversation.

Sequence the upgrade with remodel work

Open walls, garage finishes, and kitchen remodels are the cheap moments to place home runs and plan shutdowns. Pulling a service change into the middle of flooring week is how schedules break. Under renovation work we prefer one planned outage over several surprise ones.

Range, dryer, and cooktop circuits should be confirmed before the cabinet and appliance packages freeze. Shop or addition feeders should be sized with future tools in mind so the trench or wall chase is not immediately obsolete. If outdoor kitchens or pool equipment are part of the same season, put them on the load list even if they install a month later.

What a clean scope states

Replacing one device or adding one circuit does not automatically change every upstream component. The proposal should say whether service size, meter equipment, feeder, grounding, panel, surge device, and circuit migrations are included. Utility fees and timeline expectations should be called out when they apply.

Keep optional circuits and future provisions as separate lines until you confirm them. If we open the panel and find a damaged feeder lug or a grounding problem, that finding should appear as its own explanation and price, not as a vague expansion of the original number.

What to send before the estimate walk

List the new loads with approximate timing. Send panel photos, the main breaker label if visible, and notes about dimming lights, warm breakers, or frequent trips. Mention whether the house will be occupied during a planned shutdown.

Mark unknowns instead of guessing. We would rather measure than unwind a wrong assumption after equipment is ordered.
