Yes for a dedicated 240V circuit, a hardwired Level 2 unit, or any work that requires a permit. A standard 120V Level 1 cord on an existing correctly rated receptacle is sometimes already in place, but adding a new circuit or upgrading the outlet still belongs with a licensed electrician so the install meets code.

A code-compliant install with a dedicated circuit, proper breaker, grounding, and a listed charger is a normal residential load—not an inherently dangerous one. Risk comes from undersized wiring, shared circuits, or DIY splices. We size the circuit to the manufacturer instructions and local code and coordinate inspection when required.

Only if the panel lacks breaker space or the service cannot support the extra load. Many homes add a Level 2 circuit without a full service change. We check capacity during the estimate and will not quote a panel upgrade unless the loads actually require it.
