Read service size before you fall for a nameplate
Available breaker spaces do not prove the service has capacity for another large or continuous load. A panel can look empty and still sit on a service that is already carrying air conditioning, a range, a dryer, a spa, or shop tools. The first useful facts are the service size, the condition of the panel and feeder, and a realistic load picture for how the house runs on a hot afternoon.
Photograph the panel directory with the door open. Note the main breaker rating if it is labeled. List other large loads you already have or plan to add this year. That packet beats a vague request for “a fast charger like my neighbor has.”
Homes in Marietta, Woodstock, Dallas, and Kennesaw often mix original service gear with later kitchen or basement work. The charger has to fit that history, not ignore it.
Charger output and parking location move the circuit
Level 2 output choices change breaker size, wire size, and sometimes whether a disconnect is required at the parking location. A unit that sounds convenient online can force a heavier circuit than the garage wall can hide cleanly. Decide the parking spot early: inside bay, exterior wall, or a post at the end of the drive. Distance and finish path often matter more than the logo on the plastic.
Share whether a second vehicle may need charging later. A second future run is easier to leave as conduit or capacity planning while walls and trenches are open than after the driveway is sealed and the family room is refinished.
Load calculation before equipment selection
We verify charger output targets against a load calculation and the other large loads already connected. Circuit route, attic or crawl access, and finished surfaces decide labor and protection details. Permit and inspection steps vary by city, so address timing belongs in the same conversation as wire size.
If lights already dip when the outdoor unit starts, or breakers trip when the kitchen and laundry overlap, say so. Those patterns belong in troubleshooting notes and often change whether a charger is a simple add or part of a wider panel conversation. What the first quote should separate
A clear proposal separates the charger circuit and mount from optional items such as a panel upgrade, feeder work, exterior trenching, or unrelated outlet repairs. Replacing one device or adding one circuit does not automatically upgrade every upstream component. Service size, panel space, feeder path, grounding, disconnects, and actual loads still need review.
Keep future vehicle plans and permit expectations visible as their own lines until they are confirmed. If a second condition appears once the panel is open, ask for a photo and a short written change before more work is approved.
Pair charging with other open-wall work when you can
If a kitchen remodel, garage finish, or renovation is already opening paths, pull the charger route into that phase. Fishing wire after drywall and epoxy floors land is how a simple install becomes a patching project. Same for outlet and switch work on the garage wall that will hold the unit.
Outdoor lighting on the same elevation can share planning even when it uses a different circuit. One site walk beats three partial visits that each disturb the same side of the house.
What to send before we walk the driveway
Note the vehicle make and the charger output you are considering, or say you want help choosing within what the service supports. Send parking location photos, the panel photo, and any other large loads on your wish list. Mention HOA or city constraints if you already know them.
You do not need a technical report. Six accurate observations beat two pages of assumptions. Mark unknowns instead of guessing amperage or wire size.
